Postorgasmic illness syndrome: New review study on POIS published

The Oxford-based Journal of Sexual Medicine published a new review study on treatment options for postorgasmic-illness-syndrome in its July 2025 issue.

The systematic review highlights various therapeutic approaches that have been tested on patients to date. The PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched for this purpose. A total of 58 studies were found, but only 14 of them met the researchers‘ criteria, including case reports, cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies. Two studies concern women, while the majority of studies refer to men.

Various treatment methods were investigated, including medications such as antihistamines, steroids, SSRIs, and immunological approaches such as the injection of the patient’s own sperm or allergen-specific immunotherapies. Surgical procedures were also mentioned.

Although POIS severely affects the lives of those affected, research on it is still limited and there are no clear treatment recommendations. Only about 18% of experts report that more than 30% of their patients experience an improvement in symptoms.

The scientists emphasize that much more research is needed to develop effective therapies. However, the number of studies is growing steadily, and international collaboration is helping to improve understanding of the causes and treatment options.

The full version of the study is available free of charge. The link to the study entitled “Treatments for post-orgasmic illness syndrome: a systematic review” and numerous other studies can be found in the “Literature” section.
