[Case Series] Case series: expanding diagnostic markers in postorgasmic illness syndrome
Case series of POIS patients highlighting common symptoms, psychiatric comorbidities, and novel findings such as symptom onset during high arousal without ejaculation. The study suggests POIS may represent multiple underlying conditions rather than a single entity.
[Case Report] Post orgasmic illness syndrome successfully managed with antihistamine: A case report.
Case report of POIS successfully managed with a non-sedating antihistamine (fexofenadine), resulting in a marked reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life. The study supports a potential immune-mediated mechanism.
[Review] Postorgasmic Illness Syndrome: An Update.
Review of POIS outlining typical symptoms, impact on quality of life, and current treatment approaches. The article emphasizes the lack of understanding of underlying mechanisms and the absence of established long-term treatment options.
[Case Report] Novel treatment for post-orgasmic illness syndrome: a case report and literature review.
Case report of POIS treated with epididymectomy and vasoligation following unsuccessful medical treatment. The study suggests a possible immune-related mechanism and presents surgery as a potential option in selected, treatment-resistant cases.
[Cohort Study] Clinical experience with post-orgasmic illness syndrome (POIS) patients-characteristics and possible treatment modality.
Retrospective study of POIS patients describing symptom patterns, disease burden, and treatment responses. The study identifies fatigue as a key symptom and reports partial improvement in some patients, highlighting variability in treatment outcomes.
[Survey Study] Analysis of the Symptomatology, Disease Course, and Treatment of Postorgasmic Illness Syndrome in a Large Sample
Large patient-reported survey on POIS, examining symptom patterns, disease burden, and treatment approaches. The study highlights common symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive impairment, significant impact on daily life and sexual behavior, and inconsistent treatment outcomes.
[Case Report] Postorgasmic illness syndrome: potential new treatment options for a rare disorder
Case report of POIS with marked symptom improvement under alpha-blocker therapy, highlighting a potential role of sympathetic nervous system dysregulation. The study suggests that POIS may involve multiple underlying mechanisms beyond allergy.
[Case Report] Successful treatment of Post-orgasmic illness syndrome with human chorionic gonadotropin.
Case report of POIS associated with low testosterone, showing significant symptom improvement after treatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The study highlights a possible hormonal contribution to POIS and supports endocrine evaluation in affected patients.
[Review] Post orgasmic illness syndrome: what do we know till now?
Comprehensive review of POIS describing its diagnostic framework (5 criteria, 7 symptom clusters), heterogeneous symptom presentation, and multiple competing pathophysiological hypotheses. Current treatments remain symptomatic (e.g., antihistamines, NSAIDs, SSRIs), with some evidence for hyposensitization therapy, but no established long-term management strategies exist.
[Review] First assessment of the validity of the only diagnostic criteria for postorgasmic illness syndrome (POIS).
Comprehensive review of POIS describing its diagnostic framework (5 criteria, 7 symptom clusters), heterogeneous symptom presentation, and multiple competing pathophysiological hypotheses. Current treatments remain symptomatic (e.g., antihistamines, NSAIDs, SSRIs), with some evidence for hyposensitization therapy, but no established long-term management strategies exist.
[Case Report] Negative allergy study in a case of postorgasmic illness syndrome (POIS).
Case report of a 30-year-old man with typical POIS symptoms. Extensive allergy testing (skin tests and immunological assays with autologous semen) was negative. No urological, hormonal, or neuropsychiatric cause was identified, suggesting a non-IgE-mediated mechanism and pointing toward possible neurobiochemical involvement.
[Review] Post orgasmic illness syndrome (POIS).
Narrative review describing POIS as a chronic condition with rapid onset of flu-like and cognitive symptoms after ejaculation, lasting 2–7 days. Proposes an autoimmune mechanism triggered by seminal fluid rather than sperm cells, with cytokine release as a key driver.
